What is the difference between dust masks P1, P2 and P3?

Airborne dust, welding fume or mist particles can affect your respiratory system and internal organs. They can also cause irritation to the nose, throat and upper respiratory tract.

When working in an environment with a lot of dust and harmful particles, you should wear a dust mask. But do you know which dust mask to use when?

ClassificationProtection
FFP1Inert dusts, fumes and mists that do not alter the structure of the respiratory tract. Dust class 2a. Limit value ≥ 10 mg/m3
FFP2Harmful dusts, fumes and mists that may affect respiratory tracts. Dust class 2b. Limit value between 10 mg/m3 and 0.1 mg/m3
FFP3Higher concentrations of harmful dust, fumes and mist that may affect respiratory tracts. Dust class 2b. Limit value between 10 mg/m3 and 0.1 mg/m3

FFP1 masks

Dust masks, then disposable or reusable dust masks, can be divided into FFP1, FFP2 or FFP3 dust masks. The maximum permeability of these masks is 20%, 6% and 1%, respectively.

The FFP1 mask provides protection against inert dusts, fumes and mist that do not alter the structure of the respiratory tract. Examples include stone dust or wood chips.

FFP2 masks

The FFP2 mask protects against harmful dust, fumes and mist that can affect respiratory tracts. To be used for harmful dust such as that from plasterboard or flour dust.

FFP3 masks

The FFP3 mask is the best mask when you come into contact with higher concentrations of harmful dust, for example particulate matter. For highly toxic dust, smoke and mist that can be absorbed into the blood: particles of carcinogenic or radioactive substances, bacteria, viruses, enzymes and spores, it is best to choose a P3 filter with full face mask.
