Selecting the correct respirator for the application is critical when we are faced with many different types of masks; positive pressure or negative pressure, full face or half mask: the choice is vast.  It is also important to remember that effective protection is only given when equipment is of the right standard, in good condition and is properly fitted and used.  Removal of the RPE, even for short periods, reduces the level of protection afforded to the wearer.

Ensuring that the equipment has the CE symbol should be your first step as this means it meets the minimum legal requirements and conforms to the European standards.

The RPE must be suitable for:

  • The exposure concentrations (expected or measured)
  • The actual job involved
  • The wearer
  • Other factors relating to the environment

Powered Air Purifying System from RSG Safety provides clean air & flow rate

Therefore respiratory equipment has to provide adequate protection, and in the case of a powered system (as pictured above) that it provides clean air and the flow rate during the whole wear period.  The face piece must fit the wearer correctly and has to be properly maintained.  The chosen equipment should also not introduce additional hazards that may put the wearer’s health and safety at risk, such as reduced hearing in a factory where forklifts are operating.

If you are using a negative pressure facemask, they depend upon a good contact between the skin and the mask for their effectiveness.  It is only possible to get a good fit if the skin is smooth and without facial hair.  Facial hair and glasses tend to lift the mask and inward leakage can occur.  At RSG we can help you determine the correct mask choice for the application and also check the seal on individual wearers with our face fit testing equipment (pictured below).

Other factors that you need to consider are:

  • The protection values of different types of RPE
  • The potential for oxygen deficiency
  • The presence of solvent vapours (use the correct filter for the application)
  • The work involved – more strenuous jobs may require a greater air supply
  • Temperature of the area worked in
  • Does the job involve extensive movements (compressed airline may be impractical)
  • The need to communicate verbally

Finally everyone who is involved in the use of RPE should have the appropriate training.  They must be aware of why it is required and how it should be worn correctly.  If there is any doubt on this we can advise you of the best solution.
